The Pineau : A happy mistake.
The "Pineau des Charentes" was discovered by chance. In the 16 ème
century a wine producer accidently pouved the freshly pressed grape juice into a barrel of the
"eau-de-vie". Furious at his own carelessness he put the useless barrel in a corner of his cellar.
It wasn't until several years later, during a heavy harvest, he got out the precious barrel again.
Intending to throw away the contents he discovered a marvellous liquid, clear and as full on the
sun as the sol of the Charents region. "Pineau des Charentes" was born. Today the wine producers
make a point of repeating the same error.
Passed down from generation to generation, the knowledge has survived and meticulous care is
taken to achieve the same perfect results. "Pineau des Charentes" is the result of high quality
grape juice being stopped in its fermentation by the Cognac eau-de-vie. |
